I Was a Fat Founder

My career was going great as the CEO of a million-dollar tech startup, and my family was growing and thriving with three amazing sons and a loving wife, but my body had taken a back seat to all of my other responsibilities. This isn’t a new story. It was a gradual decline, a few pounds a year, but it was all starting to add up in my mid-thirties. My pants were thirty-eight inches around the waist, and I was at least fifty pounds overweight. In my mind I looked like I had in high school: a thin basketball player. But the mirror didn’t play along; I looked ugly naked.

Part of me wanted to start focusing on my health, but another part of me felt selfish for even thinking about my body. I had kids to feed. I had employees to support. I had a mental block. I associated health and fitness with young egocentric guys who had fewer responsibilities.

Then I had an epiphany one day after walking up a set of stairs to my office. While I was breathing unusually hard, I thought, “If I die young, who is going to take care of my wife, kids, and employees?” Cardiac disease runs in my family, and I was already overweight, so this wasn’t a purely theoretical thought.

Then I had another epiphany. Looking good naked, if achieved in the right way, is an indicator of overall health. Waist size correlates with cardiac health, and waist size also correlates with looking good naked. Muscularity correlates with longevity, and muscularity also correlates with looking good naked. If I cared about those around me, I should try to look good naked. Think about it—it’s not as crazy as it sounds.
